https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=291401 Summary: SCSI-based CD/DVD burners are not detected (at least) by wodim and k3b Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: ksievers@novell.com ReportedBy: bk@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: nadvornik@novell.com Found By: Development Because of bug 226019 which is also tracked at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=413960 (which was about an access conflict to the /dev/sg devices, which is resolved by using the sr_mod block devices instead of sg devices), and because /dev/scd0 is the documented SCSI CDROM device path in linux/Documentation/devices.txt, wodim of cdrkit-1.1.5.1 and newer only scans /dev/scd* and /dev/hda* e.g. when called with -scanbus. The change to use SCSI block devices in wodim also frees us from the legacy of Joerg Schilling's paradigm to always use low-level SCSI-generic at all cost even when it's hard for the kernel to ensure that simultaneous exclusive accesses to SCSI block and SCSI generic devices do not overlap (which confused some CD-writer firmware). This however also means that also k3b does not find any CD-writer in the 10.3 code base because Kay's udev rules currently do not provide the scd* paths but only the old depreciated sr* paths. Thus, one currently cannot burn in SCSI-based CD-writers (SATA, USB, FireWire) in the current 10.3 code base without hacks such as symlinking sr0 to scd0 by hand for example. scd* device paths are currently documented in linux/Documentation/devices.txt as the main device paths for SCSI CDROMs, so they should be created by udev. This is the udev rule recommended by Kay: SUBSYSTEM=="block", KERNEL=="sr[0-9]*", SYMLINK+="scd%n" I'll submit an udev package for 10.3 which fixes this as Kay recommended by this evening (which is to create an scd* symlink to the sr device) if he isn't faster than me and I'll let this bug open until the next 10.3 alpha release which should have this fix so that people are able to find it, should they be affected. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
