Interesting. Usually it's reversed (S2D works but S2R not).
Please attach the contents of /proc/asound/card0/atiixp and
/proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97* files, for both working and non-working
status.
Are there differences between ac97#0-0+regs file?
(atiixp should have some difference such as DMA position, etc.)
