https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=282608 Summary: SuSE install from USB drive Does Not Work Properly Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: crispin@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: jjohansen@novell.com, seth.arnold@novell.com Installing openSUSE 10.2 from a USB memory device does not work properly. The basic procedure is documented here http://en.opensuse.org/SuSE_install_from_USB_drive but the description could use some improvement. The problem occurs with partitioning. The installer detects the memory stick, and proposes to partition it. If you modify the partitioning proposal to remove the memory stick from the partitioning proposal, then it changes the proposal to say that it will "remove the partition". Perhaps it means "remove from the proposal" but the on-screen text suggests that it is about to wipe your memory stick. To avoid this, I pulled the memory stick at this point and let the installation proceed. The installation let me go all the way through package selection before failing because it could not find the memory stick drive. After failing, the install started over, and this time succeeded. However, the result was a fully installed system that would not boot. The only way to make the machine boot was to boot from the memory stick, select 'linux' (install) which will fail, and then offer a menu choice that includes "boot installed system" which finally can boot properly. The solution to this was to run "grub-install /dev/sda" which finally results in a working system. There are 2 bugs here: 1. The installer should be improved to detect that a detected volume is removable, and not propose to partition removable volumes. 2. The installer is doing something wrong with grub-install such that the system won't boot. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
