Summary: GUI Installation is Not Possible with (Manual ) Publish
Minimum System Criteria
Product: openSUSE 10.2
Version: Final
Platform: i386
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Major
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Installation
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: alpha096@xxxxxxxxxx
QAContact: jsrain@xxxxxxxxxx
1. PC == P3 1.5MHz
2. Video == 128Mg AGP Nivda
3. HD == 37GB
4. Physical RAM == 384 MB
This system was tested in the follow 2 configurations on version 10.2 and
failed.
The first with just its native inbuilt graphics - Presume shared memory - Yast
NON GUI installation completed, however the NON GUI installation does not
create users and after completion Boot/Loads and you are left X-Term Prompt.
The root password is not defined and NO KDE session become visible,No Network
is configured, No online update is configured and the process took almost 8
DAYS.
The second a 128 MG AGP Nivada Graphics card was installed, GUI interface
started and 4 days later had not moved pass the language selection (1st GUI
screen)
I inserted 10.0 booted from CD and after fist CD was GUI installed, first boot
took place and the rest of the disks are installing without any issue.
I understand there must have been serious reasons to load the entire
installation script and have what we have as in 10.2.
Serious considerations need to be made on the amount of RAM there is available
for the entire installation. I presume that 10.0 installation version only part
loads enough Installation script to get to a First Bott situation where /swap
space can be utilised ( I could be very very wrong here )
Drawing a comparison which I hate doing a Windows 2000 total install took 3
hours(yes I do appreciate that it loaded almost no application, however /swap
was available directly after NON-GUI based install created disk partition -
very early in install Procedure.
I will add more Physical RAM up to 512 MAX (PC limit) before I attempt to
upgrade to 10.2........
(I only have 1 simple task I require of this small 24/7 Log Viewer which is the
intention of this older PC)
