When it hapens only on 64-bit architecture ther is another workaround:
Install a 32-bit package for a SANE frontend (e.g. the 32-bit package
for xsane or sane-frontends). This way the 32-bit SANE libraries would
be used (the sane-32bit RPM should be installed by default so that you
have the 32-bit SANE libraries).
I close this bug as "wontfix" because we (i.e. Suse) won't fix it.
It will be fixed upstream (i.e. by a newer sane-backends version).
