I use KDE 3.5.6.

If I deactivate "Tastaturlayouts aktivieren" ("enable keyboard layouts") and
"xkb-Optionen aktivieren" ("enable xkb options") in KDE's keyboard layout
control module, then it works (.xinitrc is not necessary, ~/.Xmodmap is enough;
the entry in /etc/X11/Xmodmap is also enough).

Furthermore, with the entry in /etc/X11/Xmodmap, the menu key works as a
compose key in the kdm login screen.
