Yes, your new suggestion helps:

"use menu key as compose key" works, and:

KeyPress event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x2600001,
    root 0x79, subw 0x0, time 14775215, (53,136), root:(1271,167),
    state 0x0, keycode 227 (keysym 0xff20, Multi_key), same_screen YES,
    XKeysymToKeycode returns keycode: 66
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: True
