That's why I called the summary "nm-applet asserts Gtk-CRITICAL ** on startup" and not "nm-applet crashes on startup". It fills ~/.xsession-errors even if it does not crash. In the changelog I can see that the last version upgrade of NetworkManager was 11/2006. I can not reproduce the bug with the latest upstream bits, so this is either introduced by not being up to date or by a local patch.
