I just found out that Yast2 allows the selection of different versions (x86,
x86_64), so I removed the 64-Bit-JRE and JDK and installed the 32 bit version,
and now it works. "java -version" now does not talk about 64 bit ;-).

Thanks for you help, because your guess pointed me to the right direction !

Could it be called a bug in Yast2 that it allows to mix the x86_64 architecture
of "java_1-5-0_sun" and the i586 architecture of "java_1-5-0_sun_plugin" ?
I think this was also the default installation, which could not have worked by
design ?

Something strange about the architecture selection radiobuttons: though I am
absolutely sure that I re-installed the i586 version of java_1-5-0_sun the
radiobutton is set to the x86_64 architecture. I will attach a screenshot. This
seems confusing to me, is there a bug ?
