I've updated my workstation from SUSE Linux 10.1 to openSUSE 10.2.  As upgrade
method I used the Network Installation as described at
http://en.opensuse.org/Network_Install

After the update a login as user root was impossible.  I booted with
init=/bin/bash and called pam-config --initialize which fixed the problem.

As requested by Thorsten I'll attach an archive of /etc/pam.d/ and the
y2logRPM.
