Summary: OpenSuse 10.2 changed my reiserfs to ext3 on my hd and
destroyed partition table on usb disk
Product: openSUSE 10.2
Version: RC 5
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: Blocker
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Installation
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: oouc@xxxxxxxxx
QAContact: jsrain@xxxxxxxxxx

A 300 MB USB hard disk that has backed up many systems is unreachable since
plugged it in while running openSuse 10.2.
I was multi-booting on my internal hd under Windows and
many linux updates. I installed openSuse 10.2 on a
partition that had previously used openSuse 10.1, some
beta releases of openSuse 10.2, and finally Edubuntu.
This partition was reiserfs. After I installed openSuse
10.2, booting my old Ubuntu from a different partition
always failed to mount the two reiserfs partitions on my
internal hd. I finally discovered that both of these
partitions had been changed to ext3. No problem with
the internal hd. I just changed the /etc/fstab from
reiserfs on these two partitions and everything on that
hd showed up again.

But, I have a really big problem with an external USB
hd with all of my backups. It had reiserfs partitions
on it. I had previously been running openSuse 10.2 and
the USB cable got caught and disconnected while OpenSuse
10.2 had the red in use led lit up. In fact it should
not have been using the external hd at all. Bottom
line is OpenSuse 10.2 destroyed the partition table on
the external usb disk. Now any Linux just sees
/dev/sda instead of /dev/sda1 ... /dev/sda8. What can
I do to recover my year's of work on that hd?
