Replacing the x86_64 version of NX with the NX-1.5.0-73.i586.rpm 32 bit package instead allows freenx to function. It seems to be a well known truth in the NX community that the software is hopelessly 32 bit dependent and merely getting it to compile in 64 bits won't actually make it work.
