This is still strange as the configured value takes precedence over the probed.
If we look at the log file we see that the value is marked as configured not
probed. The way SetDPI() works (at least here in my sources is as expected and
don't explain the strange value we see.
Also we should receive a warning message explaining that the ddc probed values
disagree with the configured ones.
There is some bogus code in xf86Configure.c that would explain this behavior -
this code is however only used when CONFIGURE_DISPLAYSIZE is defined. I don't
see it defined anywhere in the modular tree.
