Interest in fixing CIFS issues among those competent to do so is limited to
about 2 people, Steve French and Guenther Kukkukk, and neither seem to give it
much priority.

It appears Apple is interested in keeping SMBFS alive according to activity on
the samba-technical mailing list.

Debian Etch, Ubuntu 6.10 and Mandriva 2007 compile SMBFS modules along with
their stock kernels. The only other current distro I've tried besides SUSE that
has actually dropped SMBFS is Fedora, but FC did dropped in version before last
(FC5). Even the update FC4 kernel 2.6.17 retains smbfs.

Until CIFS is mature enough to replace SMBFS, SMBFS support needs to be
retained.
