[Bug 225209] New: Create stable RPM package names (links) for repos.opensuse.org
- From: bugzilla_noreply@xxxxxxxxxx

Summary: Create stable RPM package names (links) for
repos.opensuse.org
Product: openSUSE.org
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Enhancement
Priority: P5 - None
Component: BuildService
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: thomas.schraitle@xxxxxxxxxx
QAContact: adrian@xxxxxxxxxx
Consider the following scenario:
Someone wants to installs software from the openSUSE build with RPM. He has to
know the complete URL which includes the package name, of course. However, he
has to know the correct version number of this package too.
For the first time he has to find it out anyway. But for the second time, it
would be easier just to know a stable URL that never changes.
For this reason I would like to suggest "stable RPM names". For example, if the
current package is foo-1.2.5-7.rpm, the stable name would be foo.rpm. It's the
same principle on our CDs/DVD.
I see the following advantages:
* Easier to communicate to someone else ("just download from the usual URL")
* Shorter to write in emails
* Can be automated. A script on the client side don't have to know the correct
version number.
* Anything else? :)
