I have just installed a SUSE Linux 10.1 (DVD9) and I selected custom
partitioning. I created a partition for the mount point "/" too small, so when
the system got installed and the computer rebooted, GDM didn't start and
pursuing a 'df' command I found out that the root partition was full (100%).

The installation should try to guess the size needed for installation,
depending on the packages that the user selects, and warn him/her if it is too
small.
