/lbin/sh is a very limited shell implementation that can just run commands 
and do output redirection. So, in theory, you can use 'exec' in sles9, but 
the set of commands that is available is really limited.

Things are different with sles10 or later, though, where you have a bash 
as shell and a number of tools are available.
