I've had similar problems on HP ProLiants with the tg3/Broadcom driver.  
While it might not be related to your problem, try appending 'netwait=5' 
to your kernel boot parameters.  What I saw was DHCP installs worked 
fine (would retry as the driver readied) but static IP would fail as it 
only applied the IP once and the nic wasn't quite ready yet, even if I 
nailed speed/duplex with module parms.
