SUSE Linux version? Actually your partitioning section looks good. So the hint to change the "max" to something that would fit for sure is not that bad. Maybe there is something broken with the "max" calculation on your hardware.
I've seen this on opensuse 10.2. When attempting to create an LVM partition of size "max", it attempts to allocate exactly 1 extent more than is available on the device. We get around it by setting the <size> section to something reasonable, but smaller than a fully allocated device.
