I use SuSe 10 and the init-script route is what I use now (I'd have
mentioned that) but that means that a lot (big) packages get installed
2x, adding something like up to 10 minutes to the process.

I've done this using an init-script. Hopefully, you are using a version
of SuSE that has init-scripts during autoyast. init-script is nice
because it runs during the first boot of the fully-configured system, so
you have network and everything. It made doing an 'online_update' a
no-brainer.
