I have a same problem but with SiS900 and I don't compile the grub because the SiS900 is native in the original grub. After normal installation from de original CDs the network is ok... The installation don't work only with floppy (network grub) or PXE grub. I get the message: dhcp Found SiS900 at 0xD400, ROM address 0x0000 Probing ...
