Well, there is not much background here. We just needed some artwork but did not have the money to hire an artist. So we decided to re-use some of the stuff from our studies at university (three of the S.u.S.E. founders studied mathematics).
Love it. With the anniversary of Linux this year, I think it would be marvelous to have our artwork echoing these original designs.
Btw, my favourite still is the "Steinersche Römerfläche": http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steinersche_Fl%C3%A4chen http://www.math.tu-dresden.de/modellsammlung/modellfotos/2003-2/voll/18_43.j...
What an interesting form. A beautiful version: http://www.artoolkit.org/Gallery/Radiosity/Base/SteinerQuartic.jpg
