These kind of mathematical structures were used in all "old" SUSE Linux releases.
Hubert, can you share some background on them?
Well, there is not much background here. We just needed some artwork but did not have the money to hire an artist. So we decided to re-use some of the stuff from our studies at university (three of the S.u.S.E. founders studied mathematics). Btw, my favourite still is the "Steinersche Römerfläche": http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steinersche_Fl%C3%A4chen http://www.math.tu-dresden.de/modellsammlung/modellfotos/2003-2/voll/18_43.j... Parameter files for POV-Ray can be found here: http://www.ipfw.edu/math/Coffman/steinersurface.html
