Indeed. This does seem to help the situation. I ended up doing a quick BIOS update... which turned out to be fairly laborious on my Dell e521. I have instructions on how to do it now if anyone is interested. I did a kernel update to 2.6.26-53-0.16. This, combined with the use of a spare usb hub/dongle... the device magically appears!! ...now to figure out the syncing process. Thanks for the tip Richard! cheers john On Sun, 2007-11-25 at 20:09 +0000, Richard (MQ) wrote:

Does anyone have any clue what's going on with the USB hub driver? Googling the `error -110` doesn't turn up anything useful.
Hi John,
As I posted a month or two back in reply to someone else's similar post:
I don't think this is amd64 specific - looks like the external device is too slow. Try connecting via a hub (which will slow down the link), that has cured similar problems for me, mainly on x86 platforms though.
Seeing as the other OS doesn't seem to show this problem, there may be an underlying software problem here - anyone care to comment?
I never saw any follow-up comments - I'd also be interested to know if the suggestion helps?
