When I reset, and reboot, I get a little further: it mounts the 2 disks, enters level 5, but simply halts the system somewhere on the init 5 proces. To be more precise, it displays ¨Starting lampp", then a few seconds later it simply halts and powers off.

Any idea what might be going wrong?

powerd? There might be some problem talking to your UPS.
You could disable that for testing.

Otherwise try safe mode.

It was not powerd, as I thougt I'd seen, but powersaved which halts the system. I managed to boot single user, and disabled the powersaved at inits 2,3 and 5; now Suse start up correctly.

Even so, I don't think it's correct behaviour to simply halt the system - without syncing - on call to powersaved...

Thanks for your answer,
