Thanks for the advice...But what suggestion do you have for me? Please tell me the command I need to press with hdparm. acer:~ # hdparm -i /dev/hda /dev/hda: Model=ST9100822A, FwRev=3.01, SerialNo=3LG0WYHK Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs RotSpdTol>.5% } RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=4 BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=8192kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16 CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=195371568 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120} PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4 DMA modes: **** UDMA modes: **** AdvancedPM=yes: unknown setting WriteCache=enabled Drive conforms to: ATA/ATAPI-6 T13 1410D revision 2: * signifies the current active mode acer:~ # hdparm -Tt /dev/hda /dev/hda: Timing cached reads: 1552 MB in 2.00 seconds = 774.57 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 86 MB in 3.05 seconds = 28.17 MB/sec On 9/4/05, Tim Janssen <timtjanssen@yahoo.com> wrote:

Here's the hdparm output (I used hdparm -Ii /dev/hda2):

I am unsure what the first statement means "HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Invalid argument", do you?
I tested the speeds with hdparm -Tt /dev/hda and got
/dev/hda: Timing cached reads: 3264 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1632.25 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 190 MB in 3.02 seconds = 62.94 MB/sec
The HDD is Seagate Baracude, 250Gb, 7200 RPM. Does this look alright to you? Suggestions for improvement?
Thanks for your help!
Tim

Hi All,
I run SUSE 9.3 on an AMD64 processor and ASUS A8N-E motherboard with 1 GB RAM memory on it. The performance in terms of computation is fairly ok but I am disappointed in the overall user-speed. E.g. KDE starts up fairly slow (say 30-40 seconds) and most other applications start up considerably slower

on my PIII with similar specs. Even starting up a terminal requires some waiting (which is pretty much instantaneous on my PIII).
Sounds to me like maybe your hard drive is not running in UDMA mode? What does hdparm tell you?
