Hi Andy,
nope, i do a swap partition, not a swapfile
Ok.
here is what i am trying to do
Disk /dev/hda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
/dev/hda2 3710 4210 4024282+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
red:~ # mkswap /dev/hda2 Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 2006962 kB
Did you just repartition your disk without a reboot?
if i am not miscalculating, the generated swap could be about double size ( i verified by splitting in two swap partitions ) should i overrule by explicitely stating what i need ?
It works for me (this is a 9.1 system): mahler:~ # fdisk -l Disk /dev/hda: 82.3 GB, 82348277760 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 10011 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 1 10010 80405293+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/hda5 * 1 2611 20972794+ 83 Linux /dev/hda6 2612 3134 4200966 82 Linux swap /dev/hda7 3135 4700 12578863+ 83 Linux /dev/hda8 4701 5745 8393931 82 Linux swap /dev/hda9 5746 10010 34258581 83 Linux mahler:~ # cat /proc/swaps Filename Type Size Used Priority /dev/hda6 partition 4200956 0 42 /dev/hda8 partition 8393920 4 43 mahler:~ # swapoff /dev/hda8 mahler:~ # mkswap /dev/hda8 Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 8595378 kB mahler:~ # swapon /dev/hda8 And also with a swapfile (on SUSE Linux Professional 9.3): reger:/abuild # dd if=/dev/zero of=swapfile bs=1024 count=4024282 4024282+0 records in 4024282+0 records out 4120864768 bytes (4.1 GB) copied, 78.4448 seconds, 52.5 MB/s reger:/abuild # mkswap swapfile Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 4120858 kB So, tell us a bit more on your system, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126
