nvidia kernel mismatch?

OK, I should have disabled auto-update kernel in YaST. The problem: When
I boot the system, the screen goes blank right at the end of the boot
sequence, just at the point where the graphical login screen should
appear. I had to disable S17xdm from rc5.d (from a telnet session) in
order be able to login from the console. I then was able to insert a
different graphics card and configure it to the point where I could
enable S17xdm again in order to log-in and write this email. So, the
question is this: Did the kernel upgrade screw up NVidia's proprietary
driver? I now have 2.6.5-7.145 whereas the last kernel that worked was
2.6.5-7.111.30. Am I barking up the wrong tree?
