I just got myself a Seagate SATA drive and after some sweating I managed to get it working as my primary boot drive, wasn't easy with the old 9.1 thought. Now, I'm trying to figure out where it's best to stick it. I got a MSI NEO mainboard, and there are two controllers on it. A 8237 based one, and a promise 378 one. The 8237 also controlles the IDE drives, and I have a DVD ROM and a DVD Writer connected to those. I'm toying with the idea of having the DVD Rom on one channel (IDE0) and the DVD Writer on the other (IDE1). And now my "wondering" on the subject. Isn't it better to use the promise for the sata hard disk? The DVD's are connected to the 8237, and I believe that it's the same controller that controls the sata and ide drives on the 8237 (I may be wrong), thus wouldn't I get a net gain by connecting it to the 387? and then, has anyone had any bad experiences with the promise driver ... think I heard some, but not sure.
