I kind of don't even see the problem here, it's almost certainly just
messed up mixer settings(muted master control??), I have an SB Live!
here(5.1), with 4.1 speakers, and I don't recall ever having any
significant problems with either artsd or OSS emulation... In fact, I
didn't even bother much with the onboard sound, I like this one as it
is. I don't remember when was the last time I've actually tested whether
the surround speakers work(meaning, actually have 2 more channels rather
than just emit some sound :), but I'm quite certain I have them
connected to the corresponding colours on the back(and that 4.1 sound
worked at *some* point), plus headphones to the surround jack.
