when do you get the "blank" screen?
-  right after grub, when you start booting, or later, when the x-server 
starts?

And is this after a fresh install - meaning there was no old XF86Config 
anymore, which might try to load the nvidia driver, which might not yet be 
installed for the new kernel which 9.1 installed?
