Did you check PackMan, it has prebuild RPMs for i586 and those should
run also on AMD64? http://packman.links2linux.org/

Try powersave -f to get the CPU to full speed before running. It
might be that the cpu scales up and that confuses mplayer.

that's strange already, your cpu should support SSE and SSE2.
