SuSe 9.0+scilab

Hello all,
I am running a dual opteron 244 1.8GHz machine with Suse 9.0 (kernel 2.4.21-211-smp) and when trying to run scilab (version 2.7-120) this program allocates all available virtual memory until the machine crashes. I noticed a similar behaviour was reported under 8.2 beta last year, is there any work around or is there something misconfigured in my machine ???
