But I don't think that's it. It stops completely if I boot in failsafe and I can compile a new kernel & install without problems in failsafe, etc. That would not seem to suggest hardware if its doing it so often outside of failsafe. Also, looking through list archives last night I noticed the acoustic info posted a while back. My drive, Maxtor Diamondmax Plus9, is not listed in the e-mail, but when I visited the maxtor site and did a search in their knowledgebase on acoustic, the DiamondMax Plus9 is listed as one of the drives that implement this "feature." I downloaded the amset utility to see if I could unset that just in case, but the amset will not scan past IDE controllers 0&1, and SATA controllers are IDE 2&3 on my system at least. This could be a possible cause I guess, but it just dosn't make sense to me, and I still have no way to fix it if it is. On Wed, 21 Apr 2004 16:14 , h.andy@gmx.de sent: problem
with just dumping it for an IDE drive, but I'm out of ideas at this point.
The last time I heard such clicks similar to yours my HDD crashed a few days later... In my system with a MSI K8T Neo I have a Seagate 120GB SATA Drive, connected to the VIA chipset, no problems so far (after updating BIOS)...
