Thanks Andi for your suggestion. I loaded -test5 from
kernel.org on a dual Opteron server based on TYAN
Thunder K8S (S2880) and it works fine without much
trouble. The tg3 driver is working for BCM5704.
Server reboot didn't bring up the interface
automatically. Instead it showed a "Can't get a valid
interface name --> skipped" error message. Later I
manually bring up the ethernet interface.
Now the big question is how I can compile the source
for other cards, e.g. 3ware, in 2.6 environment? Can I
modify the Makefile so it can compile?
Cheers,
Dan

Did you check 2.6.0-test5 (out since yesterday)?
It has an updated tg3 driver that should work with more chips.
The tarball from kernel.org should compile out of the box for x86-64
