In my opinion cheks and selection are different. Moreover in GUI (QT/GTK) Multiselection is CTRL-up/down/click or shift-up/down/click While checks are different. I see what you mean... it's simpler implementation, but the problem is that you cannot manage in QT/GTK the multiselection as it is nowadays, because you will always have checks with this interface.
