[zypp-devel] rpmdb2solv and rpm5

[mls: duncanmv suggested we should Cc you on this] Hi, We're planning to switch Ark Linux over to using zypper for package installation, and have taken the first steps to make it work with our rpm5 -- we've already posted the patches we're using to zypp-devel. With these patches, we got things to work rather nicely -- we can remove packages with their dependencies, and we can install new packages with proper dependency resolution. However, after any operation, we get an error about the rpm database [even though the operation itself succeeds] that can be traced down to rpmdb2solv acting differently when trying to update an existing solv file than when creating one from scratch: # rpmdb2solv -o test.solv ; echo $? 0 # rpmdb2solv -o test1.solv test.solv; echo $? db->get: No such file or directory corrupt rpm database 1 Any idea why rpmdb2solv could be failing when trying to update an older file, while it works when building from the same rpmdb from scratch? [zypp-devel] zypper bad design issues

I've forever been confused by the bad repo management design in zypper with regards to handling of repo name, alias, and description, and adding/modifying repos. Specifics: 1) zypper ar -c adds repo instead of checking URL. #507736 2) zypper ar -h addrepo (ar) [options] <URI> <alias> addrepo (ar) [options] <FILE.repo> The second version is missing the <alias> specification. 3) zypper ar URL://someplace.repo aliasstring puts aliasstring int othe alias (good) but destroys the name (very bad). The result is useless unless I am careful with the choce of aliasstring, and in any case havong identical strings for name and alias is pointless (ditch one of them altogether). 4) There is no repo description, but there is a useless name/alias scheme. I suggest to dump the alias in favour of name, and to use what is the name as description. 5) zypper lr needs to show some useable short name which can easily be copy/pasted and used(pasted) on the command line, and some informative description. 6) Adding the repos offered by yast results in a meaningless alias ("repo_somenumber") and an informative description in the name field (of zypper lr) which is however unusable as a name. [zypp-devel] How to best setup a zypper compatible repository

Hi, with the patches to sat-solver and libzypp I've posted last night and earlier today, zypper seems to work with rpm5 -- I could successfully uninstall a library and everything that depends on it. Now I'm going to make our repositories compatible with zypper -- but I couldn't find a lot of documentation on how to do that on the server side. Looking at the download.videolan.org repository listed as an example in http://en.opensuse.org/Zypper/Usage, I see it uses a .repo and a .ymp file for its metadata -- but wouldn't just dumping a solv file in the repository, generated with "rpms2solv *.rpm" do the trick without having to do a conversion on the fly? If .repo+.ymp is indeed the way to go, what would I use to autogenerate a ymp file from the packages? If a .solv file is the way to go, what other files are needed and what is the best directory layout? solv file in the top level directory with i586/x86_64/src/... directories below it? [zypp-devel] sat-solver and rpm5

Hi, sat-solver compiled fine with rpm5 yesterday -- but today, it showed it doesn't actually work, it fails to open the rpm database. The problem is that sat-solver assumes /var/lib/rpm/Packages is a DB_HASH database while with rpm5, it's actually DB_BTREE. The attached patch fixes it with a new buildtime define, not sure if db can be convinced to autodetect hash vs. btree somehow. ttyl bero
