Can we drop Selections? -> No support for Selections in the DB? -> Leave Selection in libzyyp for a while? As a known but unused kind of resolvable, otherwise pkg-bindings/UI had to be adapted immediately. -> How to behave if the user adds a repository that contains Selections? [zypp-devel] storing texts in the database

We are facing one problem. The Shr tag in YaST metadata allows for multiple packages to share some data. Basically any data the package does not specify some metadata, it is taken from the package specified in the Shr tag. We are trying to support sharing data in the database, to save space. This is normally achieved normalizing the tables, but this affects the cache write operation really slow. To support it in this way, it could be saved in a separate table like: CREATE TABLE text_attributes ( id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT NOT NULL, , attribute_code INTEGER , lang_code INTEGER , text TEXT ) CREATE TABLE resolvable_text_attributes ( resolvable_id INTEGER REFERENCES resolvable(id) , text_attribute_id INTEGER REFERENCES text_attribute(id) , PRIMARY KEY ( resolvable_id, text_attribute_id ) ) Then 2 resolvables can share attributes, and you can have any attribute in different languages. And you can share What is the problem? that means each attribute is inserted in a separate insert. (Not not mention we need to enum all Resolvable attributes ). Here comes two questions: - Can a resolvable share all text attributes except one? How often does that happens? - Can a translation include some attributes and some not for a resolvable? How often? Both questions seems to answer themselfes. It is not very probable. And in the case it happens, it is better to duplicate the information. So, what about this: CREATE TABLE text_attributes ( id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT NOT NULL, , lang_code INTEGER , summary TEXT , description TEXT , .... more ) CREATE TABLE resolvable_text_attributes ( resolvable_id INTEGER REFERENCES resolvable(id) , text_attribute_id INTEGER REFERENCES text_attribute(id) , PRIMARY KEY ( resolvable_id, text_attribute_id ) ) This needs only one insert. In the case 2 packages share a set of translated text attributes (all) in a language, they can share the record. In the rare case one attributed is not shared, you can duplicate the record. I just commited a light Ini file parser. You may wonder why? libiniparser parser is the one I had in parser/inifile and I was using. I was happy with it until I wanted to get the section names in a sane way. Then I wanted to use the InputStream classes and everything became more unconfortable. Then I realized 99% of the code of libiniparser is the basic hash, iteration, etc stuff (what you get coding in C), and only 15 lines of code was the parser itself. The parser I commited is splitted in 2 layers, one is the parser itself, which you can use for any purpose as it is incremental and uses callbacks everytime it hits entries. And IniDict, which gives you the functionallity of libiniparser, accesing the ini file as a dictionary, and providing iterators to sections and entries. Example: ByteCount size(str::strtonum<long long>(reader_r->getAttribute("installed").asString()), Unit()); _package->size = size; 1) Class ByteCount typedefs the SizeType. So do not convert to a long long, assuming this is 'big' enough. Use the appropriate type: str::strtonum<ByteCount::SizeType>( .... ) This should be always right. Looking up the concrete type is the compilers job. (If a typedef is missing, ask for it or simply introduce it) _package->size = str::strtonum<ByteCount::SizeType>( reader_r->getAttribute("installed").asString() ); 2) ByteCount's default unit is byte. So you can simply write ByteCount size( str::strtonum<ByteCount::SizeType>( ... ) ); If you want to state the unit explicitly, use the unit constants ByteCount defines for that purpose: B K M G T kB MB GB TB.
