[yast-devel] YaST vs Yast?
Hi all, this might be a little bit controversial topic, I'd like to start a discussion about the Yast name, in particularly its capitalization. (Have you noticed how did I write it?) Historically the correct name is "YaST", but nowadays the mixed capital and lowercase letters look strange and more importantly it's hard to write it. (Well, I got to using it after the years, but still I do not like it much...) And sometimes the spelling is not used correctly and is source of non-uniformity (like found in https://github.com/yast/yast-installation/pull/126 review). So my proposal is to use this form: Yast Which leads to names like: AutoYast WebYast (Esp. writing the current "WebYaST" is a real shift-key nightmare...) What do you think about it? What would you prefer? BTW we have already abandoned "SuSE" few years ago (and "S.u.S.E." even earlier), using "Yast" seems to be a logical step forward for me. Ladislav P.S.: the trademark is registered for "YAST" (see http://www.trademarkia.com/yast-77838337.html), but IMHO that should not matter as also the current "YaST" uses a different capitalization. Maybe we should ask the legal team... -- Ladislav Slezák Appliance department / YaST Developer Lihovarská 1060/12 190 00 Prague 9 / Czech Republic tel: +420 284 028 960 lslezak@suse.com SUSE -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: yast-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: yast-devel+owner@opensuse.org

Um, http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Trademark_guidelines#The_openSUSE_Marks mentions "YaST", so maybe we need to clarify this first... -- Ladislav Slezák Appliance department / YaST Developer Lihovarská 1060/12 190 00 Prague 9 / Czech Republic tel: +420 284 028 960 lslezak@suse.com SUSE -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: yast-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: yast-devel+owner@opensuse.org

I've already raised the question to PM, who is going to clarify that with Marketing, Legal or whoever is responsible. If we forget about PM, Legal, Marketing, etc., I'd prefer Yast and also the rest of names as suggested. You might have seen me using it for some time already anyway. Yes, we (as a team) need to agree on the name first, then we can ask the PM, etc. for a change (if possible, yeah...). -- Ladislav Slezák Appliance department / YaST Developer Lihovarská 1060/12 190 00 Prague 9 / Czech Republic tel: +420 284 028 960 lslezak@suse.com SUSE -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: yast-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: yast-devel+owner@opensuse.org

What do you think about it? What would you prefer?
That depends on what you mean. Do you just want to refer to the project officially as 'Yast'? Fine with me. Or do you want to replace YaST with Yast everywhere where it's used as in file names like /var/lib/YaST2/ or X-SuSE-YaST-* in desktop files or whereever else in the code? As you mentioned SuSE: we still have e.g. SuSEconfig vs. SUSEgreeter vs. susehelp. Oh, sorry for not being clear... Yes, I meant the project name.

Changing path names, script names, tags in files, etc... is dangerous and I would object it. It's similar to the discussion we had about the versioning after the big Ruby switch. Now we have Yast 3.x (3.1.x currently) although the package names are still yast2-* and the paths still contain "2" in the names. The change would include the project name which is mentioned at the documentation, help texts, wikis, etc... Of course, we cannot change the name everywhere at once, the change would be done gradually over the time. -- Ladislav Slezák Appliance department / YaST Developer Lihovarská 1060/12 190 00 Prague 9 / Czech Republic tel: +420 284 028 960 lslezak@suse.com SUSE -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: yast-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: yast-devel+owner@opensuse.org

In that case it would be even more inconsistent after the change so I'm against it. And I'm even more against it if renaming path is also intended. Regards, Arvin -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: yast-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: yast-devel+owner@opensuse.org
