I would love to contribute on the XFCE translations. But in other distros with the same version of XFCE there is full spanish support. Why? Also in openSUSE 13.1, for example, the menu entrie "File Manager" is obviously in English, but when i try to edit with Alacarte the fields are correctly filled in spanish ("Gestor de archivos"). yes, it just means that at the time of the release of xfce4-settings 4.10.1 the Spanish translation was incomplete and if there is no translation for a string the untranslated string in English is displayed, hence the mix.

That entirely depends on the Xfce project which is a volunteer effort and depends on volunteers keeping the translation in their language up-to-date with the software. openSUSE 13.2 will ship the same xfce4-settings release so there won't be any changes, if you want the next Xfce release to have better translations you should consider joining the Spanish translation team and help to make sure translations are complete and up-to-date before Xfce 4.12 is released. OK, so you are talking about desktop menus and specifically desktop files. That just reminded me of https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=829113 on which I still haven't received an answer, and the current bugzilla upgrade seems to have stripped the NEEDINFO flag. Let's see if we can get this fixed for 13.2.

Basically what happens is that our build system strips translations from desktop files based on the assumption that they are being translated via another mechanism (i.e. gettext). This is only the case for GNOME and KDE but not Xfce and other environments so there you only get the English default strings.

At least I personally have no such plans, and currently it is not even packaged for openSUSE.

The items displayed in xfce4-settings-manager come from desktop files, so they are affected by this issue as well.

Reposting my comment from http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=829113#c10: I've implemented something like this now in libxfce4util, so the xfce_rc_* API falls back to gettext translations for desktop files now. It's not free though, there are additional heap allocations and the gettext calls affecting both speed and memory usage when the desktop file is read (as opposed to glib for example) when the entries are actually accessed due to API constraints in libxfce4util. I have done quite a bit of testing on 13.2 I'd appreciate it if people could install libxfce4util from the X11:xfce repo and exercise some libxfce4util consumers (the xfce_rc_ API is not only used to parse desktop files but to e.g. by panel plugins to read and write settings and this should not be affected in any way) and test this a bit more with different locales and wrt performance (e.g. opening the application menu on slower computers) and report back here.
