[opensuse-wiki] Installation portal
Hello, It has been quiet from my side for a while now, due to lack of time. I'm now busy keeping my promise for version related installation pages. I started creating http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Installation. This is to replace the current http://en.opensuse.org/Category:SDB:Installation. Please feel free to make any additions. (check the worklist on the bottom of the portal). I'll be flying to Korea today and depending on my job and Internet connection I can (or can't) work on this. I plan to go there for 1 week, after which I should able to work on the wiki again. When all work is done an 11.4 is on the breach of release, I would like to create some links to this portal. I need some opinions on this ones: * From mainpage? * From version portals? * From distribution portal? You are not alone. I was quiet too, jumping in per request. It is probably some kind of a burnout.

What makes you great contributor is your regular reports what you are doing. It is much easier to join your efforts then someone which leaves only traces of his activity on Recent Changes. I guess that Portal:Installation is the best approach to collect in one page multitude of options. Last proposal with categories was too complex too create many followers, which is needed to have it applied or regular basis.

Main Page is boring, never changing, like nothing is happening on the wiki and projects. One has to visit recent changes to find out that project is alive and well. The service links on left side have no link to recent changes, so that alone requires some intervention. I was toying with idea to add right column to the Main page where we can harbor recent changes, some images from collection that change with every page reload (like on the Portal pages).
* From version portals? * From distribution portal?
Absolutely on both. We are very verbose on many things, except how to get openSUSE on readers computer.

On the Novell Documentation: What about direct links to the according Installation Quick Start e. g. for 11.3 to http://www.novell.com/documentation/opensuse113/book_quickstarts/?page=/docu... OR http://www.novell.com/documentation/opensuse113/book_quickstarts/?page=/docu... I am missing the USB stick / pendrive a bit in the middle/left column. Suggestion/Question: ] Should be added something like?: Burn or make a live USB-Stick[linked to SDB:Live_USB_stick] before [DVD installation instructions on http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Installation/Topics ? And added "also for live USB-Stick"[not bolted] under Live CD installation instructions [bolted] ? Absolutly true

I tried something on http://en.opensuse.org/Sandbox. It works, but is not shuch a nice eye candy. It would be nice if we could exclude the comments from that list.
from collection that change with every page reload (like on the Portal pages).

Recent changes as in what is going on the wiki and around. The Special:RecentChanges is not good as it has too much of information that is relevant only for wiki editors, not casual wiki visitors. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

The Special:RecentChanges is not good as it has too much of information that is relevant only for wiki editors, not casual wiki visitors. http://en.opensuse.org/Sandbox -- check it again ;). I created http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Wiki_activities and put some content there.
My idea: Major activities can be put on that page. Like big re-writes and new interesting topics. A small summary of that can be included on the Main_page (now sandbox) with the <noinclude> and <includeonly> tags. If the team agrees with this approach, I will start filling the "Wiki activities" page with content and update the Main_page. Suggested work flow after this process: * Protect openSUSE:Wiki activities, since it will be a delecate job updating this and it can spoil the main page layout and content. * If people want to make contributions, they can put it on the discussion page, after which an admin updates the page. * During page review on the wiki, we should notice major changes on some topics, which we can publish on this page. * We keep data on the activities page a few months around * But we only include the most recent items on the main page. (Eg. not more space consuming than the other content.) * The included data should not be more than around 5/6 lines in the box Greetings, Tim -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

Nice idea but my experience shows that all these manual task fail in the end. We used to have a lot of content on the main page, including featured articles and such, and in the end it was just always outdated. We need to find some way to automate this. Hmm that is true... I we want to do it manually, we need 2 of 3 maintainers for such a system and probably that is where the problem starts ;). But the system is not difficult, it is a sort of Wiki News page. I noticed that there is not a lot of new about the wiki out there (weekly news or something published to news.opensuse.org) This way we cover several things in one solution: * News about the wiki * More or less a featured article (it brings the attention of the public to a certain new or updated subject) * Let people know we are alive and kicking So we should have a look to automated systems. How is wikipedia doing this, manualy or automatic? Tim -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org
