[opensuse-wiki] Mediawiki extensions
Hello, after knowing too much at today^Wyesterday's wiki meeting ;-) I was asked to comment on the proposed mediawiki extensions that are listed on http://en.opensuse.org/Wiki_Team/Requested_Extensions Please note that my comments are mostly based on the documentation which is linked for each extension. Lots of my comments might sound too critical or even pessimistic - I hope those who proposed the extensions aren't too disapointed. Feel free to comment on this mail - maybe I just overlooked something ;-) Extensions requested in/for the wiki:
Rating Extension
That will allow rating of the articles on the wiki.
Last release from 2007, marked as experimental. Well, that's what a test server is for ;-) If we want to have rating, there might be other extensions for this job.
Google Maps extension
Could be a replacement for the external user map hosting. From my experience with hosting the map I'd say it needs testing on how it works with broken coordinates etc. ;-)
Extension:Tasks Extension and Extension:IssueTracker
Do we really need to make the wiki another (bug) tracking software? IMHO tracking tasks, issues or whatever name you give it is the perfect job for bugzilla. BTW: Using the wiki as tracker was already tried for the wishlists. Of course without a special extension, but still - it was quite horrible.
Extension:Bugzilla Reports
BugzillaReports generates great looking reports from Bugzilla which you can include in your MediaWiki pages (or in fact any PHP application).
The problem with this extension is that it needs direct access to the bugzilla database (at MySQL level) which probably is a no-go for bugzilla.novell.com. Having some type of bugzilla integration is a good idea nevertheless. I don't think we need "great looking reports", but having something better than {{bug|123456}} which includes the bug title and status would be nice. Maybe it could be built with bugzilla's XML or RSS export.
Extension:Nuke Extension:CheckUser
These two might be useful for admins (and those admins also know if they need them).
Extension:SimpleFeed
This extension outputs the contents of an RSS feed. * Extension:SimpleFeed
AFAIK this extension is already installed in the current wiki. (Used for example in the "openSUSE news" box on the start page.)
Extension:WikiPDF
WikiPDF is an extension for MediaWiki, which converts MediaWiki-articles to LaTeX or PDF.
Sounds like a nice feature. The question is if this is useful enough to be worth the server load... Besides that - the last release was in Oct 2007, and the CVS doesn't look better...
Extension:CategoryTree
Good idea!
Extension:Lucene-search
Lucene-search is a search engine designed to index and search MediaWiki content on large websites. [...]
Given that everybody complains about the search, this is a good idea for sure. Note that you'll also need the MWSearch extension.
Extension:Collection
This extension makes it possible to collect a number of pages. Collections can be edited, persisted and optionally retrieved as PDF, ODF or DocBook (XML)
This extension looks much better than WikiPDF that was proposed above. I still wonder if this functionality is worth the additional server load ;-)
Extension:FlaggedRevs
This will make possible to control content that is displayed to the wiki visitors.
Needed if we decide to use it for QA.
Extension:ParserFunctions
This extension is necessary to support Portal templates as used in wikipedia.
Use this to make hard to understand templates ;-) Seriously: if we need such complex templates, we also need this extension. That's the existing list. I'd like to request another useful feature. If you hit a non-existing page on the openSUSE wiki, you'll just get a "there is currently no text in this page" message. If you hit a non- existing page in wikipedia, you get a list of search results for the reuqested pagename - often they contain what you were searching for. Does someone know which extension and/or setting is doing this? Regards, Christian Boltz -- Ich brauchte ganz, ganz dringend einen Beweis, das ich zu blöd für die einfachsten Sachen bin, z.B. Email-Forwarden. Den habe ich ja nun - Danke für die Mithilfe. BOINK. BOINK. BOINK. BOINK... Die Passwörter poste ich dann morgen. Gnaaaaa!
