Hey! During Hackweek 3 Andreas Demmer and I made a new frontpage for opensuse.org, which will replace the 3-Box-Page we currently have on http://www.opensuse.org . The goals of the new page are: * pickup the visitor at the front-door * offer more information about the openSUSE-Project on a centralised page (more; not to much, many, etc., just a overview!) * stay conform with the openSUSE.org screen-design * make it easy for newcomers to dig into the openSUSE-Univers. About the page-design: The content is always placed in two columns (1/3 to 2/3) and the page is divided into two halves. In the top is the eye-candy logo with a short description (we are still looking for a better/shorter text) of the openSUSE project and the good old three main sections: software, wiki, build service. Links to all other o.o-pages are offert at the bottom of the page as hotwords, so they can be easily found with the filter in your browser or by scrolling ;-) The search bar above the the categories is not fully implemented jet. We plan a selection box (dropdown) in front of the input-field where you can select the section which should be searched (e.g. like Firefox search in the top/right corner). The placement of the search box is carefully chosen. It has a optical connection to the three sections but there is enough white-space between the search and the section-chunk to display that they are not siblings. It's in the upper-right where the most people look for a search (it's in these area on all o.o-pages). The lower part of the page contains, in the bigger column, informations like upcoming events, etc. ... what ever is hot :-) The smaler column contains the last 5 headlines from news.o.o (updates every hour), help informations and a link to shop.o.o. We made a small admin interface to change the content without the code- hacking and deploying dance. A localisation is implemented, too. But not deployed now. You can check out the draft at http://www.suse.de/~rlihm/index.shtml. We are looking forward to hear your opinions and suggestions. A suppose the page was moved to "en" some time after the post, because I could see it right after receiveing it :-) the first (upper part) is nice, the part below is a double from the home english page. Much to large on my opinion. bad idea. should probably be restricted to a "breaking news" part when necessary. Like this it only makes the message less clear this one is already overloaded http://www.mandriva.com/en enjoy http://www.fedora.org/ jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-eic8MSSfM --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org
Hi, I liked a lot, but, in my opinion, the search box in top page should appear coupled to the grey banner as a single thing (opensuse banner in grey). On Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 04:34:04PM +0200, jdd wrote:

I agree with jdd. I think the below part is much large. Best regards, -- _(~)_ )"( [[ n1ghtcr4wler ]] (@_@) xmpp:richizo@jabber.org

no, fedora.co is ugly, but the fedora.org is funny (that eye :-) and shows it's often called for Linux in the page text just a joke :-)) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-eic8MSSfM --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

This looks very nice, and is an improvement on the current one. I'm not convinced by the search-box, though - it loos adrift, and takes up too much space. It might be better to extend the grey block north a bit, and move the search box into it as a strap. -- Pob hwyl / Best wishes Kevin Donnelly www.cymraeg.org.uk - Welsh-English autotranslator www.klebran.org.uk - Gwirydd gramadeg rhydd i'r Gymraeg www.eurfa.org.uk - Geiriadur rhydd i'r Gymraeg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org
