The site should be back up now.  We started having reports of things like this happening on other sites starting late last week.  I figured out on Friday that the problem is that our load balancer appliance is having trouble with... well, load balancing.  It is sending almost all the traffic to just one proxy at any given time, even after it has stopped responding or is returning errors.  So it is also having trouble failing over.

The load balancer guy was out on Friday, so I'm hoping we can get something worked out tomorrow.  I'm also going to try some performance tuning on my end to see if we can get to where each proxy can handle all of the web traffic.  We have four of them, so needless to say, they were not designed to handle all the traffic by themselves.
