After the upgrade I am getting "non-page-aligned MMIO BAR" errors when attempting to launch that VM with the same kernel command line. Is there a different way to tell the kernel this information? I was passing a PCI USB/firewire card which had three PCI IDs: 04:00.0 (USB), 04:00.1 (USB 2), and 04:01.0 (firewire). Before upgrading, I could avoid that error and start the domain using the pci=resource_alignment kernel parameter in grub:
module /vmlinuz-2.6.37.6-0.7-xen root=/dev/sys/root elevator=deadline swiotlb=force,256 iommu=soft pciback.permissive pciback.hide=(00:14.2)(04:00.0)(04:00.1)(04:01.0) pci=resource_alignment=00:14.2;04:00.0;04:00.1;04:01.0 radeon.modeset=0 vga=0x317
After upgrading, I this error when launching the PVM: "0000:04:00.1: non-page-aligned MMIO BAR found." I have tried changing the syntax of the resource_alignment command. I have also tried using other commands, such as reassigndev= and reassign_resources.
I tried setting "(pci-passthrough-strict-check no)" in xend-config.sxp. Then the PVM launched, but oopsed when udev loaded.
Has this command changed, or is it's syntax different? I'd appreciate any
Supposedly not.
As there are a number of kernel messages associated with this, you should have provided there full kernel log (ideally for both old and new kernels, but I'd expect you don't have the old one anymore).

help you can provide. Here's some of the packages on my Dom0:

Rats. I was hoping there was just some change in the syntax.
Here is the kernel log for the new kernel (2.6.37). You're correct
that I no longer have the old kernel installed. From my limited
research on the subject I think the entry "[ 0.188870] pci
0000:04:00.1: reg 10: [mem 0xfe6fec00-0xfe6fecff]" means that the
offending device is not being realigned, otherwise it would start on a
multiple of 0x1000. The only kernel messages when I create the VM is
the NIC going into promiscuous mode and forwarding state. I would
appreciate any advice or suggestions that come to mind.
Thanks,
Shanti

That seems to be a problem not only with the Xen kernel (just try passing the same options to the native kernel and see whether you get the same errors), and is certainly dependent on how the BIOS does its original resource assignment. I'd suggest opening a bug (as it should minimally be able to re-use the BIOS-assigned memory ranges that already were 4k-aligned), but you should expect being asked to supply information documenting that this in fact worked on 2.6.31 (for this to be considered a regression). It works properly using the last OS 11.2 2.6.31 kernel on top of 11.4,
so I opened a bug
(https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=719858). Thanks for your
help.

Seems like I was wrong with the assumption that this would be a problem with the native kernel too. There was a resource handling change in 2.6.37 that isn't compatible with the Xen kernel's memory handling, which precludes resource re-assignment on any system with (roughly) memory extending past the 4G boundary. My system has 8G, so that would explain it. Thank you. I assume I'll have to remove memory or keep my kernel < 2.6.37 for the time being, but do you know if it's likely that this situation will change with the 3.0-final kernel now that Xen's been merged into it?

Not physically of course. Just using e.g. dom0_mem=2G on the Xen command should be usable as a workaround.

The upstream 3.x kernels don't have this problem, as they adjust the memory layout as passed from Xen to match the raw machine's E820 table. Since the way you ask it makes me think that you think that we would use that upstream Xen implementation right away: That would be a wrong assumption, as what is upstream is still lacking quite a few features we want to provide.
