I installed Fedora 7 because I need different distributions for a project that I'm working on. I'm gonna write here some short impressions as far as usability is concerned, from the point of view of and experienced Linux user that it an absolute newbie to Fedora and Gnome (I use openSUSE and KDE). I believe that these kind of first impressions are very valuable input. It would be extremely interesting if we could gather such data from users of other distros that are trying our openSUSE for the first time... Here they are: * Installation is very easy and pleasant. * Gnome is simple and easy to understand, but it seems limited to me, I like KDE more :-) * updates went perfectly, by themselves * SHOWSTOPPER: I needed to install gcc. It took me 1 minute to find "Add/Remove Software", because I was expecting to find it around System, not in the Applications menu. Anyway, not a problem. Then, after selecting gcc from the search results, it gave me an error saying that it cannot find the repository. _I could not find a way to add a repository_ I looked 5 minutes in the menus and still don't know. I'll google it. This means usability failure, IMO. We don't have this problem in openSUSE. However we can still improve by providing a link in YaST Installation Sources to what will come out of this project http://en.opensuse.org/Software_Portal This is going to work like "Get new addons" from Firefox, except it will be for whole repositories instead of single addons. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ux+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ux+help@opensuse.org

Actually, the very next alpha of openSUSE 10.3 will have a new feature "Suggested Installation Sources" (Repositories) in which a list of suggested URLs (with name and description) are downloaded from web and they are offered to the user just installing or upgrading the system. Such functionality will be also enabled on a running system. The other thing is the effective searching using Benji's web-pin. This is going to change its API so we can't support it in openSUSE 10.3. It would be great if people were able to add more URLs from where to
download such repository descriptions.
Yes, indeed, I'm thinking of using opensuse-community.org to host such a
file for Packman, Guru, etc... repositories that may not be suggested by
Novell.
cheers

The current solution involves two-level-linking: 1.) List of servers (URLs) where to find lists of repositories 2.) Lists of repositories The first-level is maintained by Novell, the other by either Novell or the community, of course. Otherwise it wouldn't make much sense to have two levels... Bye Lukas

OK, perfect.
We should discuss this before releasing 10.3 then (or rather for the
betas, to test it before 10.3 is released), in order to have a list of
community repositories somewhere on opensuse-community.org and add it to
the Novell-maintained list.
Except if the legal dept thinks it's a bad idea.
Has there been any thoughts about this already ? OK'd by legal ?
As coolo is the new project manager, I'm adding him to CC: ;)
cheers

We conducted a study with Windows users who tried openSUSE and Ubuntu for the first time. I hope that some results will be available within the next two weeks. .. do you mean other linux distros? Our test users were windows/mac users. Eva
