[opensuse-usability] yast network card module
Hi everybody, in order to provide the current nework card module with a clear and easy structure we have done some redesign for openSUSE 10.3. Please see http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Network_Card_Module for details. I am looking forward to your comments! Well, I'm mostly happy with current Yast-Network module, but if we update, then I really wish to push few new features as well: -Network Bridging (feature-request:) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262960 -TAP Interface creation/management (feature-request:) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262970 What do you think of it? -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-usability+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-usability+help@opensuse.org
Hi,
Well, I'm mostly happy with current Yast-Network module, but if we update, then I really wish to push few new features as well:
Thanks for your comments! Let's first do this redesign and then we can discuss other issues. I think it is an interesting idea. What do you think of it?
Seems not to very hard to implement, I'll look at it. Alexey, it seems that you are experienced with both of them, so I hope that you will help with testing and providing of informations ;-) M.

"Additionally with the increasing auto-detection of network cards it became unnecessary to add a network card" this seems arrogant... I know of many old card that are not detectable (ISA) and I see each day questions (on the lists) about new cards not known. is it so important to remove this part? jdd -- http://www.dodin.net Lucien Dodin, inventeur http://lucien.dodin.net/index.shtml -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-usability+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-usability+help@opensuse.org

this seems arrogant...
Maybe the phrasing seems so, but nonetheless it is true for most of the newer network cards :-)
I know of many old card that are not detectable (ISA) and I see each day questions (on the lists) about new cards not known.
The idea behind all this was that the current module should fit for non-technical users and users with a low experience. Usability studies show that expert users are much more efficient when working via a command line interface.
is it so important to remove this part?
In order to keep the YaST module as simple as possible, yes. it's the "most" that bother me :-)

how will these users cope with not recognised cards? If we need to ask them to use a CLI, they will use an other distro... there should be at least a "manual" tag, allowing to try manually the various modules just in case the wrong one is automatically choosen. openSUSE should not be "the distro only for Linux certified hardware"... :-(( jdd -- http://www.dodin.net Lucien Dodin, inventeur http://lucien.dodin.net/index.shtml -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-usability+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-usability+help@opensuse.org

I was assured by our technicans that this event will occur very rarley and that there are some technical solutions to provide a network card for the user even if it is a new model. And I trust them in this issue :-)

They can change the driver in the "hardware" tab when they edit the network cards.
openSUSE should not be "the distro only for Linux certified hardware"... :-((
No, I agree completely with you on that. We should be the most amazing linux around :-) Cu, Martin -- Martin Schmidkunz User Experience Specialist martin.schmidkunz@novell.com +49 (0) 911 740 53-346 ------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) ------------------------------------- Novell, Inc. Hi Martin, Network Settings - General Settings -- Network Setup Method --- Network Manager (recommended for mobile computers - laptops) --- ifup (recommended for all others) I can't guess what is expected to enter in "DHCP Client Identification" - my computer name - host name - something else I would put firewall as separate tab in this group (Network Settings), instead in some other place as it is now. It would be good for multiple network devices in one computer to have ability to turn device off/on like once before was possible with column Active. Check that column will activate device, uncheck will deactivate (unload drivers etc). This would be great help in case of problems. Network device settings - General Settings -- MTU deserves some explanation considering DSL that uses smaller MTU than 1500, to help users if they experience problems. - Address I'm missing default gateway and DNS server(s) for Static setup. -- Additional Addresses What would be that? Already configured or something else. -- Regards, Rajko. http://en.opensuse.org/Portal -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-usability+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-usability+help@opensuse.org

Hi Martin,
Network Settings - General Settings -- Network Setup Method --- Network Manager (recommended for mobile computers - laptops) --- ifup (recommended for all others)
I can't guess what is expected to enter in "DHCP Client Identification" - my computer name - host name - something else
You're right, we need to update screenshots. In current version there is Hostname/DNS tab with all this options
I would put firewall as separate tab in this group (Network Settings), instead in some other place as it is now.
I don't agree with this. Firewall is completely separate configuration module with another purpose (don't forget KISS rule - keep it stupid, simple)
It would be good for multiple network devices in one computer to have ability to turn device off/on like once before was possible with column Active. Check that column will activate device, uncheck will deactivate (unload drivers etc). This would be great help in case of problems.
You mean STARTMODE=off? We have option for this.
Network device settings - General Settings -- MTU deserves some explanation considering DSL that uses smaller MTU than 1500, to help users if they experience problems.
You're right. It would be great if you create bugzilla report for this. Could you?
- Address I'm missing default gateway and DNS server(s) for Static setup.
They are not on screenshots but we have "Hostname/Dns" and "Route" tabs
-- Additional Addresses What would be that? Already configured or something else.
More IP addresses for same interface. Bye, Michal

Firewall has no meaning outside network. If it would be in the place with other network settings than it would be real KISS: - for the guys that are trying to explain new and old users what to do. You have to tell only:"Now check Firewall tab." instead of: "Close Network settings and go [1-2-3] and check Firewall." - for new users because it will tell them that firewall is part of network settings and many will guess that they have to do something there if network has problems. I guess that this plus more elaborate help packed under "Help" button, will reduce number of confused users asking what to do.
It would be good for multiple network devices in one computer to have ability to turn device off/on like once before was possible with column Active. Check that column will activate device, uncheck will deactivate (unload drivers etc). This would be great help in case of problems.

Well, I would like to see how that looks on mockup. I can't locate version, but YaST had table with listed devices, like the one in this example, and one column was called Active. If I wanted to use some network device I would put X (or toggle yes/no, I can't recall anymore) in a column, and YaST would enable or disable that device on exit from network module. STARTMODE=off doesn't sound clear here out of the context, so I really have to see mockup.
Network device settings - General Settings -- MTU deserves some explanation considering DSL that uses smaller MTU than 1500, to help users if they experience problems.
You're right. It would be great if you create bugzilla report for this. Could you?
Hmm. (confused) I can file enhancement report, if this mail isn't enough. I guess it isn't, otherwise you wouldn't ask. ...
-- Additional Addresses What would be that? Already configured or something else.
More IP addresses for same interface.
Instead of "simple" Additional Addresses that confused me, whole sentence: "Add more IP addresses to this interface" will tell everything, almost no need for help file. -- Regards, Rajko. http://en.opensuse.org/Portal -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-usability+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-usability+help@opensuse.org
