No, no one confirmed or denied anything. I hope SuSE are just being slow on this issue. Making people live without the new features is a justifiable strategy for making them upgrade. Making people live with serious security flaws is not. Even Microsoft make security patches available...
Did anyone ever respond to Derek's question? I was curious about SuSE Kernel updates myself. Could you perhaps patch the SuSE Kernel code with a Kernel patch from Kernel.org (or has SuSE changed it enough that it wouldn't work)?
The question should have been: will SuSE supply a 2.2.16 version of their kernel, or do those who want to continue running the SuSE kernel have to put up with an insecurity?

Dear Derek, According from what i've heart they will make a new Suse kernel. It probably takes quite some time as the have patched quite a lot into their kernel. Like Reiser-fs and IEE1394 etc. (that's what keeps me waiting for the Suse kernel. I normally used the kernel from ftp.cc.kernel.org (cc=country code). But i'm right now using reiser-fs, i like it very much. I don't want to patch it in myself right now) Regards, Joop Boonen. Derek Fountain wrote:

Because the SuSE kernel contains loads of useful things like ReiserFS, LVM and such. I paid for my SuSE box set, and I expect bug and security fix support. Like I said, even MS offers that. Of course, if the other post was correct and SuSE are getting 2.2.16 together, that's fine. I just hope they haven't got too big to stop telling their users what's going on, which appears to be the case at the moment.

I am fairly sure I saw a message from Thomas at SuSE on Friday that
they were working on a new kernel. I expect a fair amount
of testing is necessary before releasing it.

Yep, but only after a) enough people complain, and b) they figure that the next version release is too far away to charge you for fixing their stuff-ups. I have just been to the website for SuSE, and following the links to support/download/updates/64_update.html got me to a pretty comprehensive page of update/bugfix links. When you look at the work that goes into producing a package like SuSE, I think they deserve more of a pat on the back than a kick in the arse for what they do! In the OpenSource world, one of the greatest strengths they have (and as a result, we have) is versatility. Instead of being forced to "make do" with something, there is a good chance that someone has already had the same problems as you are experiencing, and has done something about it. Linux (of any distro) has an impressive record in security against the proprietary software out there, but if you are truly paranoid about security, try a visit to www.openbsd.org where you will find the MOST secure system available anywhere. But it isn't as easy to configure or to use as Linux, because it's aim is nothing but security! There is the rub, if you want one thing you have to be prepared to sacrifice in other areas. Want to handle lots of simultaneous logins = FreeBSD Want to handle very secure data = OpenBSD Want to have an easy to use, desktop-type system = Linux Want to have the above with easy install and maintenance routines = SuSE Linux Want to handle lots of different system types = OpenBSD Want to hit the greatest market share of Newbies in Linux = RedHat Want to run a Web-enabled Real-Time system off a Floppy Disk = QNX The list goes on ..................... In other words, whatever you want is "out there" all you have to do is decide what YOU want, then look for the system that comes closest. The next step (which the GPL was specifically designed for) is to get someone (or do it yourself) to adjust the avaialable code to suit your application. You could give me a hundred million dollars (please!) and I could NOT produce an operating system that would please more than ten percent of its' user-base completely. Everyone would have to compromise somewhere. Sorry about the Rant :-) -- Regards Don Hansford ECKYTECH COMPUTING Surfing the Net (without crashing) With SuSE 6.4 Linux (Thanx Linus!) I'd have a guess at saying that the numbers are probably right for the US, and shouldn't be too far off the mark for Australia as well :-( Of course, we're doing our bit to re-educate the masses! The "Introduction to Linux" course we're teaching next semester is based completely on SuSE 6.4 :-)) -- Regards Don Hansford ECKYTECH COMPUTING Surfing the Net (without crashing) With SuSE 6.4 Linux (Thanx Linus!) SuSE really needs to do more advertising (like Corel and RedHat do) in the US. I personally think SuSE is easier to install, and much easier to administrate (with good old YaST) than in my experience RedHat is (I used RH 5.1 until I switched to SuSE). If SuSE had an aggressive advertising campaign like RedHat does, I bet it would really help. <kde bias>I mean how can any desktop be easier to use than one that defaults to KDE? They have been doing much more advertising as of late. In fact I see more SuSE ads now then I do Red Hat. I saw a couple alone in one issue Linux Journal. That was really cool.
