Routing on 486dx - what Suse Linux version?
A friend of mine wants a router the way that I use it (ipchains based) and I said yes, I will do. Now the problem is: Which Suse version is best? Works and...tadaa... will fit on an old 100 Meg Harddrive? The "small" package installation has become that large till now so I ask this before wasting 3 hours trying out all that I have here: 5.3, 6.1, 7.0, 7.3 Which is best for this thing? I think you'll have to opt for IPcop distribution... it's the only one i
know that could meet your requirements...

Something that isn't SuSE. While I'd love to say that SuSE will do everything, it won't. Really old versions of SuSE (like the ones you would need) won't be kept up-to-date with security patches, so aren't necessarily a good idea. I managed to get 8.0 down to about 120 MB, but I installed it on a 500 MB HD, then started cutting bits out (man pages, locale settings, etc.). It's very tricky to get SuSE *really* small. Try a dedicated firewall/router solution. You might even have difficulties fitting the newer versions of IPCop on - v1.3 wants 80 MB + 2 x RAM, IIRC. Other distributions like FreeSCO, or Linux Router Project might fit better. If you can find a slightly bigger HD, you'll find life much easier. -- David Smith | Tel: +44 (0)1454 462380 Home: +44 (0)1454 616963 STMicroelectronics | Fax: +44 (0)1454 617910 Mobile: +44 (0)7932 642724 1000 Aztec West | TINA: 065 2380 GPG Key: 0xF13192F2 Almondsbury | Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com BRISTOL, BS32 4SQ | Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk

Yes it IS DAMN tricky! But where can I read about for instance security holes 6.1 has?

Or I install it on a bigger drive, cut pieces out and then copy it to the smaller drive, right? -- *º¤.,___,.¤º*¨¨¨*¤ =Oliver@home= *º¤.,¸¸¸,.¤º*¨¨*¤ I / __|__ http://www.bmw-roadster.de/Friends/Olli/olli.html I I / / |_/ http://www.bmw-roadster.de/Friends/friends.html I I \ \__|_\ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VGAP-93 I I \___| mailto:VGAP-93-subscribe@yahoogroups.com I

Not sure - that's part of the problem. A normal security mailing list should have them, but I think you'd probably spend so much time upgrading various packages, that it's not worth the effort - you'll probably have to build everything yourself, since there won't be a SuSE package available, and you'll have to build it on another machine, since you don't have the space available. At the very least, you'll have to upgrade the kernel, sshd & bind.

Shit, why are these so large?
IPCop has a web config/admin interface, support for lots of NICs, ISDN and ADSL cards, intrusion detection, web proxy server, etc.... Plus it needs somewhere to put all those logs... Incidentally, the 80 MB + 2 x RAM requirement checked by the setup utility only came in with IPCop 1.3; I'm not sure why it's so harsh. If you only wanted a simple system, you might get away with less, but you'll have to hack the installation utility to let you proceed.
If you can find a slightly bigger HD, you'll find life much easier.

Possibly. The dedicated firewall distros don't tend to have huge amounts of stuff that's easily prunable, though. -- David Smith | Tel: +44 (0)1454 462380 Home: +44 (0)1454 616963 STMicroelectronics | Fax: +44 (0)1454 617910 Mobile: +44 (0)7932 642724 1000 Aztec West | TINA: 065 2380 GPG Key: 0xF13192F2 Almondsbury | Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com BRISTOL, BS32 4SQ | Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk
