Where to download KDE 3.2?
Hello all, I've tried to download KDE 3.2 from ftp.suse.com, but keep on losing connection there, and none of the mirrors I've tried seems to have it. Anyone care to chip in on where this can be downloaded for SuSE 8.2? Regards, Pieter Hulshoff

http://www-files.ximian.com/redcarpet2/suse-90-i586/ get the rcd and rug rpms and install them. Then start rcd with /etc/init.d/rcd start Then, as root, run "rug install red-carpet". Answer "y" when it asks you if it's ok. Then once it's finished you can start the gui with "red-carpet". To get the suse rpms to show up, do "rug service-add http://open-carpet.org" (or add that service through the GUI). Then you'll see a bunch of channels show up. From them, select KDE, and you should see all the kde packages available for update. The above steps are just for the initial installation. In future, when there's new updates available, you'll be presented with them when you start red-carpet, so you can just hit "update all" and be done with it.
Second method: rpm -Fvh http://ftp.us.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.2/SuSE/ix86/9.0/*.rpm
I tried that and got:
suillus:/home/pwa # rpm -Fvh http://ftp.us.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.2/SuSE/ ix86/9.0/*.rpm error: File not found by glob: http://ftp.us.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.2/SuSE/ ix86/9.0/*.rpm
OK, yeah, the path would have to be to the exact location of the rpms, I guess that would be something like .../9.0/base/*.rpm or .../9.0/applications/*.rpm

So many other people mention apt that it would just be repetitive :) I honestly didn't know that fou4s could be used for anything other than online updates

Actually I believe the SuSE binaries available are provided by SuSE, I believe kde doesn't support binary distribution if a distro wants to compile them and make rpm's or dep's or what have you kde will distribute it but the kde team does not create any binaries for distribution... Rob

Welcome to SuSE. In general SuSE goes for reliability and stability as opposed to bleeding edge, all the latest all the time packages. This is why you will find more servers running SuSE the MDK. They also backport security patches to the current version, incrementing the revision number so as to -not- break deps. They have also backported quite a bit of the 2.6 kernel into the current 2.4 kernel. Enjoy. Ken

I had this, it does accept it, your server has to be ft.suse.com - no slashes and the directory is pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0/yast-source/suse/ - note no slash at the start, this is then accepted. Hello everyone,
I thought about this a while ago and found an answer on suse's kde mailing list.
Open up YaST and go to Change Source of Installation. Add an ftp one, such as this: ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_8.2/yast-source
Use the 'up' button to make sure this is at the top of the list. Then, back at the main window of YaST, choose system update, and and select only update installed packages. There is a details button that shows what is going to be updated, so you can check it out yourself. Since I'm already running 8.2, this didn't update anything except all the kde and related rpms to 3.1.2. -----------------end repost --------------

Hi, When I try to add: ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0/yast-source
I get an error message: ERROR(InstSRC:E_no_instsrc_on_media)
What does this mean and what can I do about it? Thanks, Jerome
Remember to add just the server name portion in the server field and the rest (starting with /pub) to the directory field. And remember to do all the steps exactly as in the paragraph above with regard to the the install source. Its better to turn OFF the other sources with the disable button. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I ALWAYS use this method and it has always worked for me. You have to change the version number a bit.
ALSO note that this works for the mirrors which are often faster .

I encountered the same thing, and I don't think it's fixable. The problem, I believe, is that Yast expects two more directory levels, like so: 9.0/suse/ i586/*.rpm. They aren't there and you can't put them there. Paul Abrahams
Thanks for the pointer and to all who responded. I will review the FAQ before posting further.

A bit new to SuSE myself, but shouldn't they be pushing 3.2 and other new versions through YOU? Or is YOU used only for patches while users still have to go manually find and update to whole new versions?
Thanks for any clarification on this.

I've tried to download KDE 3.2 from ftp.suse.com, but keep on losing connection there, and none of the mirrors I've tried seems to have it. Anyone care to chip in on where this can be downloaded for SuSE 8.2?

I have been running SuSE 9.0 fine for about a month and have been using YaST to update packages for security errors etc.WelllastnightI accepted the upgrade of gtk2 to 2.2.2.3.36 and it seemed to install fine, famous last words! Yes I did, in fact it ran automatically after the
upgrade and I also ran in separately at the command
line.

Thanx for all the assistance you all have shown me. After a 200 KB/s download I've been staring at the Kpackage screen for the last 40 minutes, wondering when it'll be done installing (it's not showing much activity...). If it isn't done by morning I guess I'll try the good old rpm command line again. :) Regards, Pieter Hulshoff
